… we think you should check out these 5 things!

1. Toronto Islands

If you’re a fan of the outdoors, you probably know every nook and cranny of the Toronto Islands.

And if you don’t, it’s about time you stop and smell the flowers.

The Toronto Islands is a short ferry ride (a very nice and relaxing ferry ride if I do say so myself, just $7 there and back, and $4.50 for students!) from Harbourfront. It’s a popular recreational spot and home to the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport. The Toronto Islands include the famous Centreville Amusement Park for kids, and enough open space to have barbecues and go on long bike rides. Don’t forget to visit the beach at Hanlan’s point—it’s one of the few clothing optional beaches in Toronto!

2. Twilight Tuesday

Calling all foodies! For a limited time (every Tuesday in August… and there’s only one left), Drake One Fifty and Momofuku are transforming the plot of land next to Drake One Fifty into a small night market! Expect tons of yummy food and local indie music in Toronto’s Financial District, which is also probably the last place you’d think a night market would occur.

And even better, all proceeds from food sales will be donated to a local, non-profit organization. Click here for more information!

3. Bleachers: August 27th, 2014

I don’t know about you, but a summer holiday isn’t complete without a concert!

A band that’s been on my radar is Bleachers. The lead singer, Jack Antonoff, was the lead guitarist for Fun. before embarking on a solo project. Bleachers currently plays in the alt-rock and indie pop scene, with a hit single out called ‘I Wanna Get Better.’

He will be playing the Virgin Mobile MOD Club instead of the Phoenix Concert Theater. Doors are at 7p.m.—get your tickets today!

4. Fan Expo

Every August, Toronto hosts its own version of the San Diego Comic Con and calls it ‘Fan Expo.’ At Fan Expo Canada, there’s something for everybody: comic, horror, sci-fi, anime and gaming fans all have their own sections and special events going on. You’ll find a ton of Q&A Panels, meet and greets, photo ops, games, contests and more. There’s also a marketplace where local artists sell their works. People tend to skip that part and focus on celebrity stalking but I think one of the best parts about Fan Expo is the marketplace. Each stall is so unique and amazing- support local talent!

This year, they’ve outdone themselves by securing some of the Doctor Who cast members (Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill). Doctor Who takes up a large percentage of Fan Expo, so as expected, the reaction was immense. There’s also going to be a RARE Twin Peaks reunion featuring Ray Wise, Sheryl Lee and Sherilyn Fenn. And a bunch of other top names in the industry. Fan Expo really packed it up this year, eh?

Fan Expo is happening on August 28th-31st so get your tickets soon!

5. CNE/The Ex

“Let’s go to the Ex, let’s go to the Ex, coooooome onnnnn let’s go to the Ex!”

As usual, summer wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Ex. The Canadian National Exhibition opens its doors on August 15th until September 1st, 2014. There will be amusement park attractions and tons of games, contests, shops, and shows for people of all ages to enjoy. They’ve also released the full bandshell concert series of the summer. This year, CNE is introducing new gift card tickets that can be purchased at your local grocery shop. If you bought these gift card tickets before the 15th, then you can save up to $20.00! Also, I guess it’s very convenient so you don’t have to wait in line, either.
